Beckley, WV (WOAY)- In celebration of Black History Month, The 4th annual Eddiena L. Schoolfield Oratorical competition kicks off on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 3:00 p.m.
The event will be at the WVU Tech campus at 410 Neville Street in Beckley.
African-American middle and high school students will craft speeches on an assigned topic and sharpen their oratorical skills.
Legendary Black figures such as W.E.B. Dubois, Thurgood Marshall, Carter G. Woodson, Sojourner Truth, and Martin Luther King Jr. were famously known as great orators.
The organization BEAUTY, which stands for “Black Educators Are United Totally – Yes!” sponsors the event each year to provide students with an opportunity to develop knowledge and an appreciation of the art of public speaking.
