Beckley, WV (WOAY)- In celebration of Black History Month, The 4th annual Eddiena L. Schoolfield Oratorical competition kicks off on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. Â
The event will be at the WVU Tech campus at 410 Neville Street in Beckley.Â
African-American middle and high school students will craft speeches on an assigned topic and sharpen their oratorical skills. Â
Legendary Black figures such as W.E.B. Dubois, Thurgood Marshall, Carter G. Woodson, Sojourner Truth, and Martin Luther King Jr. were famously known as great orators. Â
The organization BEAUTY, which stands for “Black Educators Are United Totally – Yes!” sponsors the event each year to provide students with an opportunity to develop knowledge and an appreciation of the art of public speaking. Â
