2018 Big Atlantic Classic – Day 2

Beckley, WV (WOAY) – The 2018 Big Atlantic Classic continued Tuesday in Beckley despite weather concerns earlier in the day, with three high school games taking place.

In a regional rivalry, Westside used a quick start to win 86-57 against Bluefield in the Renegades’ first Classic appearance since 2015. Jacob Ellis & Mookie Collier each scored 22 points for their respective schools, while Shane Jenkins scored 19 points – all of them in the second half. Corey Hatfield recorded a double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds.

Earlier in the day, Van and Richwood were scheduled to meet in a Class A consolation game, but a weather-enforced change meant James Monroe faced the Bulldogs. Van established momentum early, led by 27 points from Gavin Smith in their 73-59 win. McKinley Mann was the Mavericks’ leading scorer with 17 points. James Monroe will play Wyoming East in the second Class AA semifinal on Wednesday.

In the late game Tuesday, Valley came from behind to win 52-50 over Pocahontas County and stay unbeaten in 2017-18. Spencer Dean led the way with 28 points, including the game-winning basket in the final seconds after Nick Gipson had the tying points.

Play continues Wednesday with a mix of both college and high school games.
