It has been a pleasant and dry week around southern West Virginia. Temperatures have been gradually climbing throughout the week and by this weekend, both days will be above the normal on the high end of the scale. We’ll top out in the 80s on both days.
The dry weather continues as well, which makes for nice weather for the outdoor plans. On the downside, the extended period of dry weather means that most of the area is in some type of drought. Small parts of the area are in severe drought, while other much larger areas are in moderate drought.
There won’t be much in the early part of the extended forecast to alleviate the drought as we stay mostly dry around the area. There will be a small chance for showers in the southern and eastern areas – particularly for the Greenbrier Valley starting on Tuesday as a non-tropical low-pressure center is expected to form off the Virginia and North Carolina coast. The low will give us a northeasterly flow and could throw enough moisture in our direction to trigger a few showers.
With some extra cloud cover, temperatures do fall back a shade, not quite getting to 80 degrees on average beginning on Tuesday.
Late in the forecast, a much more potent low will pass to our north over the eastern Great Lakes and will drag a cool front through the area. A much better chance for rain is in the forecast at that point, and we’ll toss in a chance for storms as well. With the passage of the front, highs will drop by 5 to 7 degrees area wide.
