Strong storms possible through this evening

It’s another warm afternoon around the region, although temperatures today are not as warm as we have been seeing the past few days.
We’re seeing more showers and storms roll into the area from the northwest. The first line of these storms hit Beckley around the lunch hour and produced decent rain and some thunder and lightning. Further to the southeast, near the Virginia line, the storm was severe, and a warning was issued for it. Now, another line is taking aim at the West Virginia Turnpike/Route 19 corridor, roughly paralleling the area from Nicholas County to Wyoming County.
Every storm that pops up today could cause flooding rains. This is since, as has been the case recently, there is plenty of moisture in the atmosphere for the storms to work with. In response to this threat, Flood Watches are in effect for our entire area until Midnight.
Gusty winds associated with the downdrafts that are part of the storms are one way that we can get damaging winds, and the rain helps to bring these gusty winds to the surface. These are known as wet microbursts, and they are the way that we’ll get damaging winds if we see any at all. The threat of severe weather, including flooding lasts until a few hours after sunset when we see a break.
With plenty of moisture around, there could once again be patchy fog around the area later tonight as temperatures and dewpoints easily get together.
Tomorrow, we’ll see more of the same, although without the middle-level disturbance that triggered today’s activity, the number of strong storms will be somewhat lower. Over the next few days, a series of weak fronts will push through the region, keeping our rain chances high but also dropping our temperatures a shade. Late in the forecast period, high pressure takes over, and more typical summer weather takes hold. While rain chances will go back down to the afternoon pop-up level, temperatures will respond by rising into the upper 80s by late next week, forcing those who will be outdoors to take heat precautions.
