Central Pup Grooming celebrates fifth anniversary

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – It’s been five years of making Southern West Virginia’s dogs feel better and happier.

“Celebrating five years is a big milestone. Really thankful for the loyal clients that we have, and it just means a lot that we’ve been able to stay open for so long,” said Central Pup owner/groomer Ashleigh Mcgee.

The business is Friends-themed (after ‘Central Perk‘).

“Lobby looks like the TV show,” the groomer said. “So a lot of people come in here just because of the name, and then they fall in love with the way we groom their dogs — and they keep coming in.”

Depending on the breed and type of coat your dog has grooming can prevent certain issues.

“Matting, skin irritation, you know — if you don’t get the nails cut, they can curl and grow into the paws,” said Mcgee. “One of the most popular breeds right now is the Goldendoodle. The longest I recommend is six weeks because that curly coat matts so easily.”

Your dog’s hair is not necessarily going to get cut the first time, they just need to get used to the process. Not only is grooming an essential part of your furbaby’s health and well-being, but it’s also a well-deserved pampering time. For many animal shelter dogs whose owners have passed away; Central Pup grooms them at no charge.

“We had one dog recently. It had been there for about four months and came in and got groomed, and it was adopted the next day,” Mcgee said.

She has been grooming for almost 10 years. After moving to Beckley, she started the business out of her house and it took off quickly. Then she took a leap of faith on expansion when the building became available and said it was worth it.

“Now we have three other groomers all just gaining even more clientele, and they brought some with them,” said Mcgee. “Really good experience and we just keep on growing.”
