WVSSAC Cancels Sports for Remainder of School Year

WOAY – The WVSSAC announced on Tuesday that the high school basketball postseason tournaments, in addition to the entire spring sports season, would be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement came following Gov. Jim Justice’s declaration that schools would continue remote instruction for the rest of the 2019-20 school year.

The status of high school sports had been uncertain for more than a month, following the suspension of the girls basketball state tournament and boys basketball regionals. For nine area teams (four girls’ squads and five boys’ squads), the season had not yet officially ended.

In a statement the WVSSAC says, “This is an extremely difficult time for our students, coaches, schools, and communities. West Virginians are a resilient group who will overcome this virus and all problems that come with it…….it is more important than ever to stay connected with our family, teammates, and friends.”

WVSSAC officials say they will provide more information to schools about the three-week summer period in the future.
