WOAY – Speaking at Governor Jim Justice’s news conference Friday afternoon, WVSSAC Executive Director Bernie Dolan announced there would be some changes made to the 2020 fall sports schedule.
Preseason was originally slated to begin on August 3, but Dolan says it will now start two weeks later on August 17. One week after that (August 24), golf teams would be able to start competitions, while other fall sports would wait one more week.
The earliest date for high school football games would be Thursday, September 3, and the first Friday of the season would be September 4. This would’ve been Week 2 in the original schedule.
Dolan says the three-week summer practice period will continue under the current guidelines; many area counties started that period this week, but some counties around the state are waiting until next Monday to start. The new list of scheduled start dates is below.
August 17 – Fall sports teams can begin preseason practice
August 24 – Regular season competition begins for golf
September 2 – Regular season competition begins for cheer, cross country, soccer, and volleyball
September 3 – Regular season competition begins for football
