Winter Classic Draws Crowd to Summersville

Summersville, WV (WOAY-TV): The first ever Summersville area Winter Classic is in the books.

More than 50 middle and high school basketball teams competed at the Summersville Arena and Conference Center. And as the Chamber Board of directors indicate, it was such a success that they are all ready for next year’s registrations.

Vice President of Summersville Chamber of Commerce Ashleigh Wall said, “Fifty-four teams from all over the state, with 16 of those being middle school on day one and then the rest of and high school boys and girls competed in basketball over the last five days.”

Merrill asked, “Are you hoping to expand this basketball tournament next year and have it during the same time between Christmas and New Year’s Day?”

Executive Director of the Summersville Chamber of Commerce Lindsey Skidmore said, ” Absolutely. Registration is already up and running for Winter Classic 2024. The ultimate goal is to bring people into the Summersville area. Let them explore our town, our area, while enjoying really great basketball tournaments.”

One of our media partners for weather forecasts, Lake Country 95.7 FM 3WS was broadcasting the play-by-play action for the games. Chief Meteorologist Chad Merrill got to step in and give a brief weather report as to what people could expect as they left the arena on Saturday night.

Congratulations to all the middle and high school basketball teams that participated in the Winter Classic and best of wishes for a successful remainder of your basketball season.
