Upper Big Branch mine remembrance ceremony

On April 5, 2010 at 3:27 PM an explosion occurred at the Upper Big Branch Mine approximately 1,000 feet underground. Twenty-nine out of the thirty-one miners on site were killed. This was the deadliest mining disaster in the United States since 1970.  A remembrance ceremony was held at the Raleigh County Courthouse on the 14th anniversary.

The Upper Big Branch Mine is located in Montcoal of Raleigh County.
