Strawberry Festival Draws Large Crowd; What Weather Helps With Production?

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Hundreds flocked to Alderson for entertainment, crafts, vendors and more importantly strawberries!

Chief Meteorologist Chad Merrill has the story:

Owner of Sunset Berry Farm, Kent Gilkerson, said if you missed out on Saturday’s festivities, come on Sunday! If you want to pick strawberries, the farm is open Sunday through Wednesday for a few more weeks. The strawberry season lasts about 6 to 8 weeks, ending around the Fourth of July.

Besides the Strawberry Festival, the Peach Festival is the highlight of September and Gilkerson says they grow watermelon and sweet corn during the summer.

Gilkerson says strawberry production this year exceeds last year. So, what weather factors lead to a bumper strawberry crop? Chief Meteorologist Chad Merrill has more:
