Scentister offers unique small business shopping experience

On this Black Friday (and almost Small Business Saturday), when you shop local your money stays local and it helps our communities thrive.

Beckley’s Scentister is all about healthy air fresheners and more.

“People don’t realize the struggles that small businesses go through — just to get a name and a reputation for themselves,” said owner/operator Devin Sawyers. “And that’s why we thought it was extremely important to incorporate other businesses in with our business.”

This new addition to Beckley has products from talented artists statewide. On this Black Friday, it’s important to support our local small businesses like Scentister.

They carry a variety of products; tumblers made in Fayetteville, beard oil made in Summersville, t-shirts made in Maplewood, woodwork made on Backus Mountain. Sawyers says all his pieces would make great gifts for people looking for things made by local talent. But the product that started it all — Devin’s own healthier air freshener.

“We don’t use phthalates. We really research our ingredients to make sure there’s nothing carcinogenic in any of our air fresheners,” he said. “A lot of people just pour basically from a bottle. We actually mix our own (essential) oils — just to create our own unique scent.”

This small business owner says downtown Beckley was thriving when he was a kid.

“Now there are very few stores; I’d like to see a resurgence and get more small businesses back open here,” said Sawyers.

It means the world to Devin to give people a different idea of West Virginia culture.

“And it’s great to see people who come into the store and see all of this different talent and know that we’re not just all hillbillies,” Sawyers said.
