Registrations open for 2024 Adopt a Highway statewide fall cleanup event on September 28

West Virginia (WOAY)—Registration is now open for the Adopt-A-Highway fall statewide cleanup on Saturday, September 28.

The state’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Division of Highways (DOH) co-sponsor the event, administered by WVDEP’s rehabilitation environmental action plan.

The event aims to improve the quality of the state’s environment by encouraging public involvement in eliminating highway litter.

Individuals, families, churches, businesses, schools, and other agencies and organizations can register to pick up trash on almost any state-maintained road, back road, or main route.

Private roads and interstate highways do not qualify.

The program will provide volunteers with garbage bags, work gloves, and safety vests and take care of disposing of collected trash.

To participate, volunteers must be at least 12 years old.

Groups must register by September 18 and inform their county DOH garage if they need supplies, which they can pick up during the garage’s regular business hours.

To register, you can call 1-800-322-5530 or send an email to dep.aah@wv.gov.

If you reach the voicemail, you are encouraged to leave your name, phone number, group name, cleanup date, number of participants, and the county where your adopted road is.
