Beckley, WV (WOAY) – Winter is a great season to spend time with those you care about, and Beckley has annual events to help you do just that.
The 2023 Beckley Candy Cane Hunt is officially on for the second year in a row, brought to you by the Raleigh County Park and Recreation Authority.
This year is shaping up to be bigger than last.
Raleigh County Parks and Recreation Executive Director Molly Williams explains, “So it’s a scavenger hunt and an award puzzle. The participants will need to go online and download the worksheet so that they have something to work with and then go to each of the park locations and look for the candy canes that will contain a clue.”
“Once they have the clue, they unscramble it and then put the phrase together,” Williams states.
Once you get that phrase, hurry up and send it to the authority to ensure you are entered to win this year’s prize, one you don’t want to miss out on.
RCPRA will pick a random winner who gives the correct answer to win a waterpark season pass, a $100 gift card, WVU Tech game tickets, and other prizes.
On top of that, the first five people to finish will win a ten-dollar gift certificate.
However, for those behind the scenes, activities like this are about so much more than prizes.
Williams says, “We do it for the enjoyment of our community. It’s a fun way to learn about different places you haven’t been to, check out different parks, and get outside. Even if you’ve been to all of our parks, you know it’s a great time of year to get out and see some things in a different season. Just getting people moving, getting people out to do something fun for Christmas.”
The holiday hunt will go on until Friday, December 22, so if you enjoy puzzles and hanging out in nature, this is the holiday hunt for you, and who knows, you might find your new favorite spot to hang out outside.
“We just hope that families and individuals have a good time and can come see our parks and are inspired to come see us another time,” Williams states.
