Former firefighter receives maximum penalty for abuse of stepdaughter

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – A former volunteer firefighter has received the maximum sentence for the sexual abuse of his stepchild.

William Pettry pled guilty to sexual assault in the first degree, sexual abuse of a parent, guardian, custodian, or person of trust, and use of a minor in the production of child pornography.

Today, he was sentenced to at least thirty-seven and a half years behind bars. However, he could spend up to one hundred thirty years in jail.

He faces fifty years of supervised release if he is ever paroled.

Raleigh County prosecuting attorney Ben Hatfield said that there were multiple factors that led to Pettry getting the maximum sentence, including his lack of remorse on his risk assessment evaluation, the seriousness of the conduct, and the age of the victim.
