Ford recalls over 500,000 F-150 pickups due to transmission malfunction

West Virginia (CNN)—Ford is recalling more than 550,000 of its pickup trucks due to a risk of transmission malfunctions.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a report on Monday stating that the recall covers some 2014 F150 trucks.

The problem is the potential loss of a signal between the powertrain and the transmission which can result in the truck downshifting into first gear no matter how fast it is going.

The NHTSA says the abrupt change can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles and increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers were recently notified of the issue.

Ford says it will begin mailing notification letters to owners on July 1.
