Federal employees get day off in honor of President’s Day

Oak Hill, WV (CNN)- Businesses and schools nationwide are closed today to honor President’s Day.

The federal holiday is celebrated on the third Monday of every February.

While it began as a day to honor George Washington’s birthday, it now honors all 46 past and current presidents.

In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Holiday Bill to mandate that President’s Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day happen on a Monday to prevent a midweek shutdown and create a long weekend.

Businesses then took advantage and started offering annual President’s Day sales.
