Bluefield State to add 12 sports, including football

WOAY – Bluefield State College announced over the weekend plans to add 12 intercollegiate sports, including the return of football.

The Big Blues last fielded a football team in 1980, and would likely play home games at Mitchell Stadium. The venue, owned by the City of Bluefield, is also the site of home football games for Bluefield High School, Graham High School, and Bluefield College.

The Big Blues currently have 10 intercollegiate teams that compete as an independent member of NCAA Division II, and this weekend’s announcement means that tally would more than double.

In addition to football, Bluefield State plans to also add women’s soccer, women’s golf, women’s swimming, women’s bowling, women’s acrobatics and tumbling, women’s indoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field, men’s indoor track and field, men’s outdoor track and field, men’s swimming and wrestling.

Bluefield State has been an independent in NCAA Division II since 2013, when the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference disbanded, but there are reports that the school could join a conference in the future.
