Beckley City Council hears ordinance for DROP program for police

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – The Beckley City Council approved the reading of a new ordinance for a Deferred Retirement Option Plan or DROP program for the Beckley Police Department.

The program allows retired sworn officers to continue to work for the city and still hold their pensions for up to five years. A similar program has already been implemented by the Beckley Fire Department and benefits both the city and the officer.

“What this does is it helps keep qualified officers in place for a longer time, and it is beneficial to both the city, the pension fund, and to the officers that are taking advantage of the program,” said Beckley City Recorder Billy Trump.

The council will hold a public hearing and vote on the ordinance at their next meeting on August 11, 2020.
