Juvenile petitions being considered against Greenbrier West wrestlers pertain to sexual matters

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney Ben Hatfield has confirmed that the juvenile petitions that his office is reviewing against several male members of the Greenbrier West Wrestling team deal with sexual matters.

The specifics of the petitions have not been released and have yet to be filed officially. The prosecuting attorney and Raleigh County Sheriff’s office are working together on the matter.

The petitions stem from an incident that occurred at a Beckley hotel in February.

Greenbrier County schools interim superintendent Doug Clemons released a statement today, saying that it can’t release specific information about the investigation. However, it said it acted swiftly and is complying with law enforcement.

Clemons also clarified the recent retirement of former Superintendent Jeffrey Bryant, saying it was planned before recent incidents involving the school.

“[Former Superintendent Jeffrey Bryant]’s commitment to education and excellence will have a lasting impact on our school system and those who have had the opportunity to know and work with him. With respect, he asked that the focus for this last quarter of the school year remain on the students, teachers, and staff of Greenbrier County schools. Unfortunately, some have drawn the incorrect conclusion that his retirement is related to the recent incidents in the school system. However, that is simply not the case,” the statement reads.
