A local business stepped up today to help a Raleigh County school with a time-sensitive need.
Some students at Woodrow Wilson didn’t have the right clothes for gym class, and the Communities in Schools program reached out to the Beckley Raleigh Chamber of Commerce for help.
“We are always looking for partners in the community to help us in our mission. First and foremost, we make sure that basic needs are met for students. But then we’re looking for ways to empower them and help them achieve in school and in life,” Lindsay Flanagan, a Communities in Schools program representative at Woodrow Wilson, said.
Communities in Schools is a national non-profit that works in most counties in the state of West Virginia. It works to keep kids in school and prevent dropouts.
The chamber of commerce sent out a request to local businesses, and the Dutch Miller Auto Mall stepped up.
“I’m honored that they did that. They came here to give us the opportunity to help on this program,” Jeff Serio, an owner at Dutch Miller, said. “I have six kids of my own, and they’re very, very blessed to be able to have what they need. And I just think it’s important to do that. All kids, all children and everyone has everything they need to complete their education.”
