West Virginia University’s head men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins was arrested and charged with driving under the influence Friday night in Pittsburgh, according to the Pittsburgh public safety blotter.
The official criminal complaint says that a breathalyzer test found Huggins’s blood alcohol content (BAC) to be .210. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is .08. Officers also found empty beer cans and bottles in his SUV.
The complaint said that the SUV was leased through West Virginia University.
Huggins was initially stopped by officers who came upon him in his SUV blocking traffic near the North Shore at around 8:30 p.m.
Police say the left rear tire of his SUV was “shredded,” and the vehicle was stopped with the driver’s side door open.
According to the report, the police tried to help Huggins move his SUV out of the road, but Huggins had trouble driving it. Police then stopped him for questioning.
Huggins allegedly showed signs of impairment and failed a field sobriety test. According to the criminal complaint, Huggins stated that he was in “Columbus” several times and had trouble standing and keeping his head still during the sobriety test.
Huggins was taken to Pittsburgh Police’s Zone 6 precinct, where he failed the breathalyzer test. He received a blood test at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was released from custody this morning, and a preliminary hearing will be held at a later date.
WVU Athletics released a statement Saturday morning saying that the school is aware of the arrest and is “gathering more information and will take appropriate action once the review is complete.”
Huggins is already suspended for the first three games of next season for previous comments made on a talk show, in which he used a homophobic slur to describe fans of Xavier University.
