Oak Hill, WV (WOAY-TV): Our trip on the Sunday took us to Snowshoe Ski Resort in northern Pocahontas County, where the temperature is 28 degrees and a light dusting of snow and heavy frost coated everything.
Cory Payne, employee of Snow Creek Mountain Sports said, “Was a good bit of frost. There was a pretty heavy frost starting right about the fog line coming up the mountain. And then it just got a little bit heavier the further up you went. Windchill, I saw was down to 19.”
There was also a hard freeze warning and the growing season has ended. The snow guns, of course, are not on because it’s way too early in the season.
The fall foliage season above 4,000 feet has also come to an end here across northern Pocahontas County. A lot of the leaves are off the trees.
A little bit of snow last night is nothing new. Two point eight inches is the average amount of snow that snowshoe gets in the month of October. And as you see from this graphic, three out of the five least snowiest winters even had a trace to two inches in the month of October. So it’s just nothing new. The snow last night that has since melted is not a precursor to a cold and snowy winter.
So going forward through the rest of the season, they hope to open by Thanksgiving weekend, which is the end of November. Eventually what we’re going to see is this cold weather continue to filter in across the rest of the region. We will see the growing season end by the middle of October across the Route 19 and I-64 corridor, and eventually we’ll see our first snow.
But I think we have to wait a little bit farther south here of Snowshoe Ski Resort.
