Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard to hold flag retirement ceremony

BLUEFIELD, WV (WOAY) – The Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard is planning to hold a flag retirement ceremony this Friday.

The ceremony is an honorable way to retire flags gathered by the Veterans Honor Guard. The flags might be torn or otherwise damaged and require appropriate disposal. William Bailey, the co-commander of the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard, says that honorably disposing of a flag is a lengthy process, which why it’s done as a ceremony.

“It’s a flag retirement. It’s flags that have been torn, and what they’ll do is there’ll be a ceremony. They’ll be ceremonially burned and the ashes will be taken care of,” Bailey said.

The ceremony is expected to have more than 1,000 flags be honorably retired. The ceremony will take place Friday, July 3 at 8:00 P.M. at Bowen Field.
