Local fire crews rescue cat trapped in structure fire

STANAFORD, WV (WOAY) – Tuesday night, authorities were called to Piper Street in Stanaford for a structure fire. None of the residents were inside the home, but local fire crews were able to save a cat that was trapped inside.

“Barbara, the cat was unresponsive laying in the home. They got Barbara out of the house and to the medical tent, where they were able to revive the cat. She is alive, and we’re hoping she makes a full recovery,” said Public Information Officer Will Davis.

According to Davis, Barbara was the only cat rescued, but neighbors told firefighters that multiple cats escaped during the fire. Search crews were able to find four additional cats on the scene. Along with Barbara, the remaining cats are being treated and sheltered at Raleigh County Humane Society.

“Raleigh County Humane Society and Raleigh County Animal Control have been out here rounding up some of the other cats that the residents had in her house and taken them to the animal shelter where they are going to care for them until she is able to claim her pets again,” said Davis.

Barbara was taken by Raleigh County Animal Control to a local vet to receive treatment for smoke inhalation.

“There are going to be some vet bills. People can make donations to the Raleigh County Humane Society and, they’re going to help get the vet bills paid so it’s an undue burden for the homeowner, they have enough to deal with right now,” said Davis.

Raleigh County Humane Society is accepting donations to help cover Barbara’s medical expenses.
