Lincoln County man shot dead by authorities after fleeing attempted traffic stop and assaulting an officer

Lincoln County, WV (WOAY)- A Lincoln County man is dead, and an officer is recovering from their injuries following an altercation stemming from an attempted traffic stop. 

According to a West Virginia State Police press release, on Wednesday, Trooper Clagg, Senior Trooper Hurley, and Senior Trooper Chaffin initiated a traffic stop on 10 mile road in the Ranger area of Lincoln County.    

The suspect, 46-year-old Harman Davis of Branchland, fled on foot into a wooded area.  

Senior Trooper Hurley located Davis, and a struggle ensued.   

The suspect produced a knife and reportedly attacked Senior Trooper Hurley, causing multiple stab wounds and lacerations.    

Trooper Clagg reportedly witnessed the attack and discharged his firearm, striking Davis, who was pronounced dead on the scene.  

Lincoln County Emergency Medical Services transported senior Trooper Hurley to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was rushed into surgery.   

Hurley is currently in stable condition.  

The West Virginia State Police is conducting the ongoing investigation.
