Lewisburg man enters congressional race

LEWISBURG, WV (WOAY) – A Lewisburg man has entered the race for West Virginia’s first congressional district, encompassing Southern West Virginia.

He joins the race as the only registered Democrat on the ticket. On the Republican side, incumbent Carol Miller is taking on a primary challenge from Derrick Evans.

Jim Umberger is a Vietnam Veteran who served in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. He also worked in mental health services.

In a statement, Umberger said that his life experience has prepared him to be a leader.

“I believe the skills I have honed over a lifetime in service are desperately needed in Washington. I am running to return civility, rational problem solving and functional, collaborative governance to the state and country I love,” he said.

Umberger has been on the Greenbrier County Planning Commission and the board of multiple local organizations.
