KIA issues recall of almost 320,000 vehicles due to trunk malfunction

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) – Kia has recalled over 300,000 cars due to a trunk malfunction.

The recall affects Rio and Optima and Optima hybrid vehicles from 2016 to 2018.

The malfunction refers to the trunk latch potentially breaking and not opening from the inside, increasing the risk of a person inside the trunk becoming trapped.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report,  the recalled cars do not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Kia will mail letters to notify vehicle owners affected by the recall by October 19.

Customers can take their cars to a Kia dealership to have the problem fixed free of charge.
