IRS to resume issuing tax reminders following post COVID pause

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) –  People and groups who owe back taxes will soon get a reminder in the mail from the Internal Revenue Service.

The IRS stopped sending reminders in February 2022 because the agency was dealing with a significant backlog from the pandemic.

Now, the agency will send notices and offer penalty relief to nearly five million people, businesses, and tax-exempt organizations.

The IRS commissioner says offering the penalty relief is “a commonsense approach to help people in this situation.”

However, only certain taxpayers will be eligible.

The agency will only work with delinquent taxpayers who owe less than $100,000 in back taxes and will only apply to people late on paying debts from their 2020 and 2021 returns.
