Cool Ridge man dies in Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office custody

A man died after hanging himself in a holding cell at the Raleigh County Sheriff’s headquarters.

It all started when deputies with the RCSO responded to a standoff situation in Cool Ridge early Wednesday morning.

Sheriff Jim Canaday says, “Friends and neighbors as well as Raleigh County deputies were able to make entry into the residence and take him into custody. Deputies placed the male under arrest and transported him to Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office headquarters for processing, as well as potential mental hygiene commitment procedures.”

As deputies completed necessary paperwork, the man was placed in a holding cell… where the sheriff says he was able to take his own life.

“During this process, deputies discovered he had used parts of his clothing to hang himself in the holding cell despite the physical countermeasures in place,” Canaday said.

According to the sheriff, deputies immediately began lifesaving measures on the man and also called for emergency medical services.

Unfortunately, they were not successful in saving his life.

An internal investigation into the matter is now underway. The man’s name is currently being withheld to allow for family notification.

Sheriff Canada says that his office is examining the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
