WVU Tech is hosting a Blood Drive on campus on January 27th

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY)- WVU Tech’s Black Student Union is hosting a blood drive tomorrow January 27th. They’re doing this as a way to kick off Black History Month, which starts this coming Saturday.

It’ll be at the Learning Resource Center on Kanawha St in Beckley from 9 am to 3 pm. WVU Tech has a few helpful tips for a safe and successful donation.

Be well rested for your donation. That’ll help keep your vital normal, prevent dizziness or fainting, and help you recover faster.

The next thing to do is to eat foods rich in iron. Due to donating, your red blood cell count and iron would be lower than normal. So eating iron-rich food will also aid in recovery. Also if your iron is too low it could prevent you from donating altogether.

Another thing is to make sure you stay hydrated. Since blood is 50% water, your body can compensate for the loss of blood better than it would otherwise. It’s recommended that a few hours before you drink 16-32 oz of water.

Lastly, and this may sound silly but, plan your donation outfit. Wearing short sleeves will make it easier for the technicians to find your veins. Since you’ll be lying down for some time during the donation, it’s best to opt in for comfort and warmth with your clothes.

If you’re interested in donating, you can visit the link below to register and type Beckley’s zip code (25801) in the search feature to find a blood drive.
