WVU football announces changes with defensive coordinator position

WOAY – WVU football head coach Neal Brown announced Monday that multiple assistants will share defensive coordinator responsibilities by committee for the 2020 season.

The news comes following last week’s announcement that the Mountaineers parted ways with defensive Vic Koenning following comments made by Koenning as early as spring 2019. Koenning had also worked under Neal Brown at Troy.

Assistant coaches will continue their individual responsibilities; Jordan Lesley will coach the defensive line, and Jahmile Addae will oversee cornerbacks. Jeff Koonz will remain as inside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator, while Dontae Wright will now coach safeties, and Jeff Casteel succeeds Wright as outside linebackers coach. Casteel rejoined the program in March and has 33 years of college coaching experience; he was on the staff for all three of WVU’s BCS bowl wins.

West Virginia is scheduled to open the 2020 season in Atlanta September 5 against Florida State.
