WVU Cancels Spring Football Game

WOAY – For the second time in three years, West Virginia football will not be holding a spring football game.

The Mountaineers’ Gold-Blue Game, originally scheduled for April 18 in Morgantown, has been canceled due to ongoing developments with the COVID-19 outbreak. This follows the Big 12 Conference’s decision to extend its suspension of team competition and practices from March 29 to May 31.

WVU’s 2018 spring game was canceled due to anticipated inclement weather that weekend in Morgantown.

Head coach Neal Brown said in a statement, “It’s disappointing for our players and fans that the Gold-Blue Spring Game is canceled. The game is the highlight of the spring for everyone. These are very serious times, and this is the right decision. We need to do everything we can to protect our student-athletes, University, state and community. Last year’s spring game was a great day, and let’s work to bring the event back bigger and better next April.”

West Virginia opens the 2020 season September 5 against Florida State in Atlanta. Their home opener is September 12 against Eastern Kentucky.
