WV ROBOTICS SUMMER CAMPS
The NASA IV&V Educator Resource Center, NASA WV Space Grant Consortium, and Mountaineer Area RoboticS (MARS) 2614 are teaming up with our partners across the state at the James Rumsey Technical Institute, Mountaineer Middle School, RCBI, and the NASA SEMAA Lab to deliver five weeks of robotics summer camps across the state of West Virginia. This will be our largest camp initiative ever, and will be a team-based program centered around learning to build, document, and program the LEGO EV3 robot and compete in the World Robot Olympiad (WRO).
CAMP REGISTRATION: https://goo.gl/forms/KZQIjBEfJCSRD1tk1
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Individuals OR Teams of 2-3 students can register together for the camp. Students will work in teams of 3 at the camp. The intent is for students who are new to LEGO Robotics or who are on existing FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams to form themselves into smaller groups so they can develop their technical and teamwork skills while competing in a NEW tournament series called WRO!
We will provide robots and iPads for those teams that need it. A Robot is NOT required. But, if you are an existing FLL team or have a LEGO EV3 robot, we prefer if you can bring your own and means of programming (laptop or tablet). WV will be earning two team invitations from each camp to the WRO nationals in North Carolina in September 9-10 (and hopefully the Worlds in November 9-10 in Costa Rica!).
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Cost is $125 per student and includes 4 full-days of camp (9am-5pm), snacks and lunch each day, WRO team registration, and a Friday tournament (9am-3pm) with awards. Payment is by check or money order only, mailed or dropped off to the NASA ERC. These fees only cover the supplies, meals, trophies, etc. All staff are being paid by the WV Space Grant, MARS, and the NASA IV&V Program.
There is hardship money available for students that can’t afford the $125
WHAT AGES CAN COME?
This year, there will be two age categories:
- Elementary: 9-12 years old (at the time of camp).
- Junior: 13-15 (at the time of camp).
WHERE AND WHEN AR THE CAMPS?
- June 5-9, James Rumsey Technical Institute, Martinsburg, WV
- June 12-16, Mountaineer Middle School, Morgantown, WV
- June 19-23, Fairmont State University, Fairmont, WV
- June 26-30, Robert C Byrd Institute, Huntington, WV
- July 17-21, WV State Extension NASA SEMAA Lab, Beckley, WV
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Use this form to register your student or team for the 2017 WV WRO Summer Camp Program. If your student is attending camp by themselves, they will be grouped with other individual or pairs of students because this is a team-based program. Coaches / parents are not required to attend the camp Monday-Thursday, but if you wish your student to participate in the Friday WRO Competition, at least one adult will have to attend with each team and serve as their coach (no experience necessary).
WHAT IF I WANT TO SEND A TEAM ONLY TO THE FRIDAY TOURNAMENT?
You can register a team for the “Regular” event through the WRO website, https://www.wro-usa.org/register. Students coming to camp do not need to do this.
