WV Miners Drop Season Opener

Beckley, WV (WOAY) – The West Virginia Miners began their 2018 season Wednesday night at Epling Stadium, but it was Kokomo opening the season with a 13-4 win.

The Miners scored in the opening inning, but the Jackrabbits would respond in the second inning, taking the lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly. Kokomo continued to increase the lead, scoring three in the eighth and five in the ninth, though the Miners would answer with several runs in the later innings.

Mason Washington batted 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Brendan Mapes also brought in a run. Woodrow Wilson alum Chris Metrick, who started the game, struck out seven in four innings.

The Miners and Jackrabbits will play at Epling Stadium Thursday evening at 6:35.
