Woman charged after child found on roadside yelling “help”

GREENBRIER COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – A woman is in jail for child neglect after someone found her son a mile away from home in his underwear.

Around 1:38 a.m. on Monday, authorities responded to a call about a child seen running down Route 60 in the Hines area. The caller described the child as being around 10 years old and wearing only underwear and sandals while yelling “help,” and “fire.”

Around 2:24 a.m., Pamela Lowe, 41, reported a child missing that matched the description of the child found nearly an hour before.

Lowe’s home is about a mile from where the child was found. Lowe allegedly told police that after she took her medication around 10 p.m., she gave her child his medication. It wasn’t until 2:00 that she and her husband realized the child was missing and called 911 20 minutes later.

Officers determined that Lowe was too heavily medicated to care for her child, allowing him the opportunity to leave the safety of their home to walk down a major roadway in 37-degree weather, causing risk of severe injury.

Lowe is charged with child neglect and is at Southern Regional Jail under a $20,000 bond.
