Winter Storm Avery arrives in southern West Virginia

RALEIGH COUNTY (WOAY)- Winter storm Avery has arrived- bringing freezing rain and causing icy roads.

Some school’s in the area- closed or delayed. People have been heading inside trying to stay dry and cars- covered with ice on their windshields.

“I saw a couple of accidents this morning,” Amanda Young said. “It’s dangerous on the roads. Be careful.”

“The roads were slick on my commute to work from oak hill to beckley,” Brock Fitzpatrick said.”

“There was a good bit of ice on the bridges so just be careful when you’re out,” Young said.

Many people throughout the area are without power and could be for days. But the AT&T in Beckley, letting people come in to charge their phones and cars.

Temperatures continue to drop as the rain keeps falling at a fast pace. The message from people in our area is to “buckle up and be safe,” Fitzpatrick said.
