West Virginia State Police to increase patrols as part of Six State Trooper Project taking place May 18-25

West Virginia (WOAY) As Memorial Day weekend and the busy summer travel season approach, West Virginia State Police are stepping up enforcement efforts targeting speeding and seat belt violations.

The increased patrols are part of the Six State Trooper Project taking place May 18-25.

The project is a multi-state partnership focused on highway safety, criminal patrol, and intelligence sharing.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is joining forces with state police agencies in West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Pennsylvania to crack down on issues including impaired driving, illegal drugs, illegal weapons, and unbuckled drivers.

West Virginia troopers will focus enforcement efforts along U.S. 119 from Charleston to Williamson and Interstate 64 from Charleston to the Kentucky state line.

Officials say seat belt enforcement efforts will likely target heavily traveled Memorial Day corridors with historically lower seat belt usage rates and higher numbers of fatal crashes involving unrestrained passengers.
