West Virginia Republican Party Celebrates Teacher Pay Raise, Return to Classrooms

CHARLESTON – This morning, WVGOP Chair Melody Potter praised the West Virginia Legislature’s historic teacher pay raise and celebrated the anticipated return to classrooms.

“I am proud our Republican legislators have reached a deal that provides a 5% pay raise to all public employees, including teachers, state police, and service personnel,” Potter said. “This pay raise would not be possible without the leadership of our Republican legislators, who resisted tax increases and instead insisted on spending cuts to provide the largest pay raise in our state’s history. Now we can get back to the classroom and embark on the vital work of improving our state’s education outcomes for all our children,” continued Potter. “As the daughter and sister of educators, and the grandmother of two boys in the public school system, I would like to thank the Legislature and Governor for their leadership in providing pay raises for all public employees and re-opening our schools!”

The five percent across-the-board pay raise for public employees is the largest in state history. Today’s deal is expected to end the nine-day statewide teacher work stoppage and reopen schools.
