West Virginia Department of Health urging caution when using lime for flood recovery

WELCH, WV (WOAY) – As flood recovery efforts continue, the West Virginia Department of Health is warning people to be careful when using lime to treat mud.

Lime can be used on mud to control smells and stop flies and bacteria from getting out of control.

According to the Department of Health, lime can cause chemical burns to skin, and straw should be placed on top of lime when it needs to be walked over. It should not be used in standing water.

If you get lime on your skin, wash it off with as much water as possible. If you suffer a burn, get it in your eyes, or inhale it, seek medical attention immediately.
