A West Virginia county commissioner who crashed his car while driving under the influence has been arrested.
The Charleston Gazette reports that Ed Hawkins was arrested and charged with DUI and speeding. Hawkins is president of the Monongalia County commission.
The criminal complaint says that Hawkins crashed his car into a guard-rail on Sunday night. a deputy smelled alcohol and noticed that he had bloodshot eyes. Hawkins told authorities that he drank two glasses of wine about an hour before the crash.
Authorities say Hawkins refused to take a breath test.
A judge released him on a personal recognizance bond Monday. Hawkins did not respond to a request for comment.
