WATCH: Joe Manchin retains Senate seat, defeats Patrick Morrisey

CHARLESTON (WOAY)- Incumbent Democratic Senator Joe Manchin dancing the night away after retaining his seat in the United States Senate. He and hundreds of supporters were all smiles after he defeats Republican challenger Patrick Morrisey.

“I couldn’t be more proud,” Manchin said. “Of all the races I’ve been in this one means so much to me.”

People calling the election bitter and acrimonious. <anchin saying it’s the toughest race he’s ever been in.

“This was the most difficult challenge for me because we’ve never had this many headwinds,” Manchin said. “When you have the president of the U.S. come to little West Virginia 8 times, sends the VP 3 times and sends his family in here the day before the election and they think they’re gonna roll over us and tell us how to vote?”

Manchin was greeted by supporters who say they’ve been with him from the start- and that West Virginia made the right choice keeping him in the Senate seat that he’s held since 2010.

“I know what a leader looks like,” Gary Borestein said. “I know somebody who is out for our best interest and he makes things happen and he gets attention from that world in DC.”

“There are people from all walks of life,” Valerie George-Ellis said. “All ages from all different kinds of businesses, every group you can imagine and we’re all here together. We’re supporting the same man that we believe supports us.”
