Vigil held in Beckley to remember George Floyd

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Community members in Beckley gathered this evening to remember George Floyd.

After just two days of planning, at least a hundred attended the event, including elected officials and political candidates.

The goal was to remember Floyd after his untimely death last week and acknowledge the need for change across the country.

“We are hoping that people felt inspired,” said event organizer Dr. Kristi Dumas. “We are hoping that people felt the solidarity here, that they felt the unity and that they felt that people of all races absolutely dismiss and do not accept what has happened in other places in the world.”

A statement from Beckley Police Chief Lonnie Christian condemns the actions of the former Minneapolis police officer that killed Floyd, saying that behavior will never be acceptable in Beckley.
