UPDATE: LASHMEET, WV (WOAY) – New details are emerging after a woman shot and killed a man over the weekend in Mercer County.
According to court documents, State Police responded to a home on Presbyterian Avenue in Lashmeet of Mercer County at 3:26 pm. A neighbor flagged down troopers and told them that Monica Hartwell had shot Michael Walker, and had gone back to her house and had not seen her since.
When police arrived at the home, they found Walker lying with his head under a bush on the right side of the front porch steps with his feet still on the steps. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
A short time later, Hartwell was taken into custody, and she stated that the gun was in the living room on the couch.
A witness told police that they had been drinking wine coolers for two hours, and Walker started running his mouth like he was God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit. Hartwell had told several witnesses that she had threatened she was going to do this [shoot him] because Walker was a demon from hell, and the county would be a better place without him. One witness said that he went out the back door, came around the left side of the house when he heard a door open and a gunshot.
A second witness told police that Walker’s health had been declining, and he had been talking out of his head on the date the incident happened. The second witness went on to say the last thing he heard Hartwell say before the shooting was that the decedent had demons in him, and he had infected three counties with demons.
A third witness said she heard Hartwell say, the demons were going to be out of here.
When troopers interviewed Hartwell, she told them that she and Walker were not married. They asked her when the demons got him, and she said six months ago. In the complaint, it says that Hartwell started to cry and stated that the decedent was claiming to be Jesus and God. Hartwell noted that she loved him but finally saw who he was. He was not god, he was a demon, and she had to do it [kill him] to protect her community.
Hartwell is charged with first-degree murder.
