UPDATE: New Information in Deadly Nicholas County Fire

NICHOLAS COUNTY– One person is dead after a fire broke out early this morning.

Wilderness Fire Chief Charley Bickford tells Newswatch they responded just after 2am to a structure fire with entrapment. They arrived to find a fully involved structure fire, with one occupant pronounced dead on scene. Three other subjects were able to get out of the house safely. The residence had working smoke detectors, which alerted the family.
Bickford also says once on scene, they were confronted with a male subject with a rifle, initially denying access to the scene. They were able to calm the man down, and it’s believed he was just anxious given the severity of the incident. They are uncertain if he was a family member or just a neighbor.
The deceased is a mid-70 year old female subject, that has yet to be positively identified. The WV State Fire Marshals Office is investigating the incident.
Summersville FD and Kesslers Cross Lanes FD also assisted with the call.
