UPDATE: Man sentenced on sexual abuse charges

FAYETTEVILLE, WV (WOAY) – Jeffery T. Mauzy, Prosecuting Attorney, announces that on July 2, 2020, Richard Curl, age 34, of Charleston, was sentenced by Chief Circuit Judge Paul M. Blake, Jr. to ten to twenty years in prison for the felony offense of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, custodian, or person in a position of trust to a child.

Upon release, he will be under extensive sex offender supervision for twenty years. Curl entered a guilty plea to the crime on the same day.

The victim came forward in 2018 and disclosed multiple instances of sexual assault over the course of the year while the victim was a teenager.  Curl will register as a sex offender for life after his release from prison.

This crime was investigated by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department. The case was prosecuted by Prosecuting Attorney Jeffery T. Mauzy.


OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) –  A man has been arrested after allegedly sexually abusing a family member.

Richard Anthony Curl has been arrested on sexual abuse charges stemming from December 2018. According to court documents, a female victim stated that Curl had been allegedly sexually abusing her and showing her pornographic videos. A family member of Curl mentioned to the police that he had been accused of sexual abuse in two other states.

Richard Curl has been charged with sexual assault in the second degree, sexual abuse in the first degree, sexual abuse by a person in a position of trust and use of obscene matter with intent to seduce a minor.

He is currently in South Central Regional Jail under a $50,000 bond.
