Woman Killed By State Police In McDowell County Identified

UPDATE: WELCH, WV (WOAY) – On Sunday, April 28, 2019, at approximately 9:10 pm, troopers from the Welch Detachment of the West Virginia State Police received a 911 call in reference to an unwanted person at the Stop Abusive Family Environments facility (SAFE) located near the community of Welch, WV.

Shallon Oglesby with State Police says the suspect was identified as Shawna Widemann, 49, of Welch, WV.  The troopers were advised the suspect was currently at this location armed with a claw hammer banging on the door.

Upon making the 911 call for assistance, The SAFE facility was put into lockdown status. The troopers arrived on scene and located the suspect, who was brandishing a claw hammer.  The suspect ignored commands from the troopers to drop the weapon and lunged at one of the troopers in a threatening manner prior to both troopers discharging their duty weapons.

The suspect was later pronounced dead at the scene. Both troopers are on critical incident leave.

This incident remains under investigation.

WELCH, WV (WOAY) – The West Virginia State Police have been involved in an officer-involved shooting in Welch, McDowell County.

Two troopers have been placed on critical incident leave pending an investigation.

A female suspect was pronounced deceased on scene.

This investigation is on-going.
