Tourist dies after being blasted by airplane's jet engine

ST. MAARTEN – A woman is dead after participating in a popular tourist activity in Saint Maarten.

Police on the Caribbean island said on Wednesday, the 57-year-old New Zealand woman was watching airplanes take off and land at the airport, which sits next to a popular beach.

As one plane was preparing to take off, its engines blasted and blew the woman away. She suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where she died.

Police on the island said the popular tourist activity is “extremely” dangerous.

“Many tourists come to the island to experience the thrills of the landing of approaching aircraft’s flying low above their heads and the holding on to the airport fence and standing in the jet blast of large aircraft’s taking off. Doing this is however extremely dangerous,” the police force post on its Facebook page.

Local authorities are urging visitors to the island to heed the warning signs that are placed at that location to avoid serious injuries or death.
