Tips to avoid frozen and burst pipes in extreme cold weather

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) As temperatures drop, experts warn that the risk of frozen and burst pipes rises.

Damaged pipes are one of the most common and costly causes of winter property damage.

According to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, burst pipes can lead to thousands of dollars in water damage, making preparation especially important during periods of extreme cold.
Pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, garages, and exterior walls are most at risk.
To help prevent freezing, homeowners should keep garage doors closed, open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate, and let cold water drip from faucets connected to exposed pipes.
Experts also recommend keeping the thermostat set to a consistent temperature, even overnight, and leaving the heat on no lower than 55 degrees if you plan to be away.
Insulating exposed pipes and sealing drafts around doors, windows, and foundations can also reduce the risk of freezing.
If you suspect a pipe is already frozen, experts say to turn on the faucet and apply heat slowly using a hair dryer, heating pad, or warm towels, never an open flame.
If a pipe bursts or you can’t safely thaw it, turn off the main water supply and call a licensed plumber.
Taking these simple steps now could help homeowners avoid costly repairs as winter weather continues.
