Thomas Health furloughs workers unrelated to virus response

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Thomas Health is furloughing hundreds of workers who aren’t related to the West Virginia hospital system’s coronavirus response, the company said Friday.

A news release from Thomas Health said “less than 500” employees with be temporarily furloughed starting April 5.

“While the majority of our workforce will continue to work full-time, we have had to take the difficult step in temporarily furloughing workers who do not have positions directly related to our most critical needs,” said Dan Lauffer, Thomas Health president and CEO.

Lauffer said the furloughed workers will be brought back when the pandemic ends.

Thomas Health operates Thomas Memorial Hospital, Saint Francis Hospital and Thomas Health Physician Partners, all in the Charleston area. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, but maintained it would stay open.
