Teachers to Picket at Capitol on Wednesday After Comments by Carmichael

CHARLESTON (WOAY) – Teachers will return to the Capitol on Wednesday despite a deal being made with Governor Jim Justice on Tuesday.

Union leaders alerted their members that they will arrive at the Capitol around 6:30 Wednesday morning. This is in reaction to a statement made by Senate President Mitch Carmichael.

Union leaders say Carmichael has called the governor’s proposed pay raises of 5% for teachers and 3% for all other state personnel “frivolous” and “ridiculous”.

NPR says Carmichael said his chamber will take a hard look at the fiscal environment before agreeing to the salary increases.

In response to these statements by Carmichael the WV Democratic Party tweeted the following:

No word on if this will affect teachers returning to work on Thursday.
